A basalt canyon wall that feels carved by rhythm, not by hand

The Symphony of Stones is the part of Garni Gorge where the rock seems arranged with rhythm. Tall basalt columns hang above the Azat River valley, changing from cool grey to warm brown as the light moves. It is a natural stop if you are already visiting Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery.

This is not a place to rush through. Walk down into the gorge, stand below the columns for a minute, and look up: that is when the volcanic scale of Garni becomes clear. Garni Gorge is larger than one photo stop, but the main Symphony of Stones section usually takes 35-60 minutes. In summer, bring water; for photos, morning or late afternoon gives softer shadows.
