Yeghegis Village

In Yeghegis village, history is not sealed behind an entrance desk. It appears beside a fence, on a hill or at the end of a lane. At 1,580 metres, the present settlement and the medieval town share the same ground. The best route is therefore not a chain of car stops, but a slow walk from one stone “address” to the next.

Address 1: the hill with an open sanctuary

At the eastern edge, Zorats or Surb Stepanos Church immediately breaks the familiar church outline. Instead of a closed prayer hall, the focus is an open sanctuary facing a broad courtyard. The monument belongs to the fourteenth-century Orbelian setting. Treat the popular story of blessings for mounted soldiers as one interpretation, then study the architecture itself: an altar designed to address people gathered outdoors.

Address 2: a dome among village homes

The lane to Surb Nshan Church is part of the visit. Narrow streets, dark and reddish masonry, khachkars and gravestones show that Yeghegis is not one fenced complex, but a neighbourhood assembled over centuries. Do not climb carved stones or move even small fragments. Morning or late-afternoon side light reveals the cuts and inscriptions far better than flat midday sun.

Address 3: another story across the river

The practical final line
