Ijevan Wine Factory
A working winery founded in 1951, with cellar tours and tastings by arrangement
Ijevan Wine Factory was founded in 1951 and is one of Armenia’s long-established operating wineries. It is located in Ijevan, in the landscape formed by the Aghstev and Spitak Jur river valleys. The company produces grape and fruit wines, brandies, sparkling wines, fruit vodkas, juices and preserves. The main reason to visit is to understand the production process, not simply to buy a finished bottle. It can form part of a city visit with Ijevan Dendropark.
From a Soviet-era winery to modern production
The enterprise changed ownership in 2005, after which production areas were renovated, modern equipment was introduced and the range expanded. According to the company, its vineyards now cover more than 300 hectares, as described on the official Ijevan Wine website. Grapes are also sourced from Tavush. Recognised labels include Mkhitar Gosh, Sargon, Ijevan Red, Ijevan White, Areni and Ijevan Selected.
What the factory tour may include
On a pre-arranged guided tour, visitors may see stainless-steel production tanks, selected bottling or storage areas and the cellar with oak barrels. The guide explains the differences between grape reception, fermentation, storage and maturation; the My Armenia programme also documents this tour format. The cellar also contains barrels made from Caucasian oak. Because this is an operating factory, the accessible areas can vary with the season and the day’s production schedule.
Tasting and the factory shop
A tour may finish in the tasting room with a presentation of several wines or brandies. The exact selection, refreshments and price should be confirmed when booking. Alcohol tasting is for adults only. Anyone driving should avoid alcohol and choose a non-alcoholic product. At the shop, remember the name of the drink you preferred and check the label for style, vintage, alcohol level and storage guidance.
How to arrange the visit
The factory is at 9 Yerevanyan Street in Ijevan. Do not assume that a tour or a guide in your preferred language will be available without an appointment. Confirm the date, time, language, group size, programme and price in advance. Check the factory’s current contact details before departure. Allow approximately 60–90 minutes. Travellers arriving through the region may also stop in Dilijan.
