Spitakavor Church Ashtarak
A compact 13th-14th-century roofless church in old Ashtarak, distinct from Spitakavor Monastery in Vayots Dzor
Spitakavor Church in Ashtarak is a small roofless monument and must not be confused with the monastery of the same name in Vayots Dzor. Ashtarak municipal material dates this church to the 13th-14th centuries. Its main walls, western portal and semicircular apse survive.
The portal suggests the former whole
Dressed stones around the western arch preserve a clear entrance axis. Compare the triangular facade top with broken side-wall edges to distinguish intentional form from loss. Never climb walls or fallen masonry.
The apse keeps direction in an open hall
Without a roof the room may feel like a court, yet the eastern semicircular apse preserves liturgical orientation. Its narrow window focuses light. Walk slowly because loose stones and uneven ground can shift underfoot.
Modern objects are not medieval fabric
Icons and memorial texts in the apse show present devotional use; do not describe them as medieval exhibits. Never move them, lean new objects against historic masonry or light candles where no safe fitting exists.
Three colours, three different buildings
Local legend links Karmravor, Tsiranavor and Spitakavor to three sisters’ dress colours, but this is tradition rather than construction evidence. Architecturally, Karmravor is an intact cross-domed church, Tsiranavor a large three-aisled basilica, and Spitakavor a small hall ruin.
Choose the correct namesake
A local description appears on Mshakuyt, while municipal dating is listed in Ashtarak’s tourism concept. For an active nearby sanctuary see Mughni Saint Gevorg; for the same local story, continue with Karmravor and Tsiranavor.
Light helps separate form from loss
Morning or late-afternoon side light reveals the depth of the portal and the curve of the apse more clearly. Do not step behind an unstable wall for a backlit frame: a safe position matters more than a perfectly symmetrical photograph.
